Heritage Works and Maintenance

Did you know Luna Park is the oldest amusement park in Australia? Learn about our important heritage works and maintenance, in support of future fun.

Luna Palace Closed for Heritage Repairs and Maintenance

Luna Park Melbourne, a beloved century-old icon in St Kilda, is currently undergoing important heritage repairs and maintenance, focusing on its historic Luna Palace. As part of this preservation effort, the upstairs function room has been temporarily closed. Scaffolding now adorns the exterior of Luna Palace, where visitors would typically see the vibrant mosaics created by renowned artist Pamela Irving. These mosaics, installed between 2010 and 2013, have been carefully removed for safekeeping while restoration continues. Luna Park remains open during these vital works.

A Piece of History

As Luna Park approaches its 112th anniversary, Luna Park is also one of the few heritage amusement parks left in the world. We must protect and nurture this beloved landmark for future generations.

A Look Back at the Dodgems and Mosaic Masterpieces

The Dodgem cars have been a crowd favourite at Luna Park since 1926. Originally located upstairs in Luna Palace, they are now part of Luna Park’s rich history. Meanwhile, Irving’s iconic mosaics, titled Dreaming with Open Eyes, are being temporarily stored. These works of art were crafted using hand-made tiles, recycled china, and antique figurines – a testament to Irving’s creativity and love for Luna Park. Irving, inspired by her childhood memories, has said that the hearts featured in her mosaics symbolize her love for the park.

Restoration of the Face & Towers

In addition to the work on Luna Palace, exciting restorations are underway on Luna Park’s famous towers. Over the next six months, the towers will receive a much-needed refresh, with their thematic trimmings and architectural features being renewed. A fresh coat of paint will restore the towers to their original glory, and the lighting will be revamped to bring back the nostalgic 1912 glow. This restoration follows the 2022 rejuvenation of Luna Park’s iconic “Mr. Moon” entrance, ensuring that the park continues to be a magical destination for all. Every step of the restoration process is overseen by a heritage architect with extensive experience in maintaining Luna Park’s charm, with full support from Heritage Victoria.

Looking Ahead

Luna Park is an integral part of Melbourne’s history, and with these vital repairs and refurbishments, it will continue to enchant future generations. The Luna Park team are committed to keeping the fun going, ensuring the park’s legacy lives on.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting journey as Luna Park transforms into an even more magical destination.
